EKO: LANDMARKS OF LAGOS, NIGERIA.
Eko( Lagos to many) of the early 20th century was a beautiful and charming town. Her people were as interesting and as her architecture was enchanting. The blend of traditional, Portugese, Brazillian, Sierra Leonean and colonial architecture gave Lagos her own unique character, distinguishing her from other towns and cities in Nigeria and beyond. A century of British colonial rule leading up to the independence of Nigeria in 1960 meant that Lagos meant that Lagos went through such and epochal transformation as to almost lose the link with her unique past. Today, Lagos has become a metropolis , with the result that many of the distinguishing features of her early days have either disappeared completely or are about to be submerged in the sea of modern development. It is the phenomenon, nay, this journey from the past to the present, that this pictorial book seeks to document and preserve from the single perspective of architecture.. This book seeks to preserve and keep alive for generations yet to come memories of good old Eko, the city of Lagos, which we share with other men and women of our time.
